Hand Painted Cakes — Creative Cake Art

Hand painted cakes are very unique. I have had the pleasure of painting on many cakes. Sometimes the images are painted onto sugar plaques that are then removed and framed.

TYPES OF PAINT
There are many different types of paint that can be used on cakes.
You can use regular liquid food dye or gel colour, mixed with water or alcohol, or you can buy colours specifically designed for painting , like the EdibleArt decorative paint by Sweet Sticks or Portaleo Paints.
Another method is using dust colours . They can either be brushed on in a dry form or they can be mixed with alcohol to create a liquid colour.
Larger areas can be airbrushed with liquid food colour and finally shimmer can be added along with gold or silver powder to give the cakes a real sparkle !

HAND PAINTED WEDDING CAKES
Below are some examples of painted wedding cakes.
One of them shows rural landscape. I was sent images of the landscape of where the wedding was to take place. The bridal party were painted in miniature on the sides of the cake, along with the farm animals in the fields .

In 2008 I created my first painted wedding cake. This was for a couple that who were getting married at Melbourne Zoo. Two fondant cheetahs represented them, and I painted an African landscape around the safari themed wedding cake.

I often draw inspiration from the wedding theme and the invitations. Many cakes reflect the invitation like the hand painted filigree wedding cake and the wedding cake with the painted names. Another couple had a Japanese themed wedding hence the painted apple blossom wedding cake and another used the painting The kiss by Gustave Klimt as their invite, hence the The Kiss wedding cake .

In 2011 I made a cake for a bride and groom that wanted their cultural background represented. This can be seen on the wedding cake that shows the painted flora and Fauna of New Zealand and Australia

HAND PAINTED FLORAL AND FAUNA CAKES

Cakes painted with flowers, butterflies and birds are always popular for various different occasions, particularly birthday cakes.

The painted robin Christmas cake was one of the first cakes I decorated back in 2024!!!

PAINTED PORTRAIT CAKES
The majority of these painted portraits are painted on sugar plaques that were then removed and kept.

The first image shows the birthday girl painted in the style of Alphone Mucha. She loved the Art Noveu work of Mucha. I had to include her birth month flower and her birth month bird in the painting, hence the marigold and the swan

Tupac was painted onto a cake for a massive Tupac Shakur fan, A pet dog was painted onto a cake for girls 13th birthday . Vintage portraits have also been created with muted colours.
